Synopsis

The lesson is part of the course titled, Math in the Modern World, a new General Education course.  The lesson exemplar in Mathematics is about the Fibonacci sequence under the Chapter in Mathematics in Nature, which covered one period of 1.5 hours and is intended for first year college students. The lesson intends to create awareness and appreciation of Fibonacci sequence in nature by allowing students to recognize Fibonacci patterns, calculate nth terms in the Fibonacci sequence and identify patterns in nature. The lesson contains the major parts: learning outcomes, target audience, pedagogies, use of technology, lesson strategy, assessment for/of learning, reflection and modifications.  The learning outcomes focus on the recognition, identification and appreciation of the Fibonacci sequence as it is applied in nature with corresponding calculations. The target audience involves a varied group of freshmen since they come from both public and private high schools.  The lesson caters to the different multiple intelligences of the diversified group of students. The lesson prospers from a word problem where students are allowed to discuss among their classmates in pair or in a group.  This activity will elicit varying ways in which students come up with their answers.  Having previous knowledge on sequences, the Fibonacci sequence will be introduced.  Better understanding of the Fibonacci sequence will be achieved by presenting pictures of objects in nature and a video that exhibits the Fibonacci numbers.  The student’s reflection on the video will help the teachers gauge if the lesson is understood. Assessment of learning will be done both in the formative and summative types.  Recitation after the activities will show the level of learning acquired by the students.  Difficulties will be addressed.  Performance tasks will be assigned to students depending on their learning style, which was previously identified using a Multiple Intelligence Test. Strategies in the teaching will be modified depending on the challenges encountered in the conduct of the lesson.
