Science (Biology & Agri-Fisheries) Lesson Exemplar (Muscle Types)
Synopsis
This Lesson Exemplar is about the different muscle types. It is one of the subtopics of movement in the specialized course Animal Physiology. It covers 1.5 hours lecture and 3 hours laboratory. The target audiences for this lesson include the third year college students taking up BS Biology major in Animal Physiology who are regular students, second courser, and working students. The lesson exemplar has two parts: lecture and laboratory. The lecture part starts with the pre-assigned video presentation of the different muscle types as the motivation. It is followed by the powerpoint presentation of the lesson on the different muscle types which is connected to the video presentation. The presentation of the lesson also includes the use of the laptop, LCD, digital microscope, prepared slides, Human Body model, and Mr. Muscle model. Tools such as the laptop, LCD, digital microscope and prepared slides present the actual specimen of the three different muscle types. Mr. Muscle models the different skeletal muscles, their locations and functions. The Human Body model is for the locations and functions of the visceral muscles and cardiac muscles. The lecture part ends with the summary and short quiz. The laboratory part of the lesson exemplar starts with the flow chart as the pre-laboratory discussion before the students will conduct their laboratory activities in the laboratory room using their laboratory manual. The class is divided into five groups. The first group will do the activity using the Mr. Muscle model. The second group will make use of the Human body model, while the three remaining groups will use the binocular microscopes and prepared slides. Round robin strategy is used so that each group can perform all the activities. Individual laboratory report is submitted one (1) hour before the end of the laboratory. The remaining laboratory hour is used for the post laboratory discussion, practical exam and item analysis of the exam. The results of the exam and laboratory reports will serve as the evaluation if there is a need to re-teach the lesson or move to the next lesson.
